Grief Support and Bereavement Care

Our part does not finish when the service does.

We stay in touch with families after the funeral, and we will help you find the right support in Wellington when you want it. Sometimes what people want is not a referral at all, it is someone to listen for twenty minutes. That is fine too, and it is not an imposition.

Our support is available for as long as you need it. You can call (04) 385 0745 whenever you would like to speak with someone from our team.

There is no right way to grieve

Grief looks and feels different for everyone. There is no right way to grieve, and no timetable for it.

Grief can change from one day to the next. A familiar place, a piece of music or an ordinary moment may bring feelings back when you least expect them.

These changes are a natural part of grieving, and there is support available whenever you need it.

The weeks after a funeral can feel very different once family and friends return to their usual routines and the practical arrangements become quieter.

Someone from our team will get in touch after the funeral to see how you are. We will always respect how much contact feels right for you. [TBC: to confirm with Lucas]

There is a practical side as well. Accounts to close, agencies to notify, a headstone to think about eventually, and paperwork that turns up weeks later. Ask us about any of it. We do this every week and you have not done it before.

Children and teenagers grieve differently from adults, and differently from each other. A child can be distraught one hour and playing the next. That is not coping badly, it is how a child handles something too big to hold for long.

Teenagers more often go quiet. They may not want to talk to a parent who is grieving too, which is exactly where somebody outside the family helps.

We can point you toward people who work with children and teenagers, and toward material written for their age rather than yours. Skylight is one of the services we commonly share with families looking for support for a child or teenager.
